Padang - FURTHER INFORMATION
Padang - Singapore visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Padang' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Singapore.
Panorama from Padang, a park in the middle of the Civic District in Singapore. When Thomas Stanford Raffles laid out the city plan for Singapore he wanted the area around Esplanade reserved as an open public space. The then First Resident of Singapore ignored this order and allowed construction on that site. Furious, Raffles then set Padang aside as the public area and a number of important public buildings are around the park
Padang has also been called the 'Padang Cricket Ground', the Singapore Cricket Club is on the southern end. However, Padang is used for numerous sporting activities and events aside from cricket.
Along the west side of Padang, running from south to north, are the Supreme Court (with what looks like a spaceship landing on the roof), the City Hall and St. Andrew's Church, which is overshadowed by the tall buildings around City Hall MRT.
To the north of Padang is the War Memorial Park. Just to the south of the Padang are the Victoria Theatre & Concert Hall (with the original statue of Thomas Raffles out the front, you can see the tower of the Victoria Theatre & Concert Hall over the red rooftops of the Singapore Cricket Club), The Arts House, Asian Civilisations Museum and Raffles Landing Site (with a copy of the original Thomas Raffles statue).
