The Istituto Statale d'Arte is close to Porta Romana (Roman Gate) south of the center of Florence (Firenze). The institute was founded in 1869 and then based in Santa Croce district of Florence. It started as a 'School of wood carvers, furniture makers and Legnajuoli' later becoming the 'Professional School of Industrial and Decorative Arts'.

In 1919 the institute changed again to meet the demands for technical and design training. It moved to the current buildings Parco della Pace (Park of Peace), originally designed as stables for the Pitti Palace, in 1923.

The Istituto Statale d'Arte continues to teach and produce many top artists, decorators, set designers, architects and designers, fashion designers and costume designers. The roll call of past students includes many famous in their sectors round the world.
