Piazza Della Indipendenza (Independence Square) is one of the most famous public squares in Florence (Firenze), but is not a major tourist attraction. The square lies north of the city center, not far from Firenze SMN Station. It is transected by a road that links Fortezza da Basso to the west with Piazza San Marco and the San Marco's Church in the east.
The area around Piazza Della Indipendenza was laid out in the 19th century and it is named after the uprising in 1859 which saw the overthrow of Grand Duke Leopold II and the annexation of Florence into Italy. Each half of the square contains a statue, one of Bettino Ricasoli by Augustus Rivalta (1897) in the northern half and Ubaldino Peruzzi, the first mayor of Florence by Raffaello Romanelli (1896) in the southern half.
Piazza Della Indipendenza is surrounded by many grand buildings of the 19th and 20th centuries, many of which carry plaques of famous writers and artists that lived in them.
