Piazza del Campo is one of the grandest medieval squares in Europe and one of the top attractions in Siena, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre of the city. The shell-shaped square is surrounded by various palazzi signorili, sloping down to the Palazzo Pubblico and Torre del Mangia.

Piazza del Campo developed from a market square at the meeting point of three hillside communities that eventually merged to form Siena. It was paved in fishbone-patterned red brick in 1349 and is divided into 9 sections by ten lines of travertine radiating from the mouth of the gavinone (the central water drain). This was symbolic of the Nine (Noveschi), a mercantile-banking oligarchy which ruled the Siena as a city-state from 1287 to 1355.

The uniformity of the various palazzi signorili completes the form of Piazza del Campo. These used to be the town houses of important families in Siena, today many contain restaurants and cafes.
