Sankt Blasien with a population of about 4,000 lies 770m above sea level in the south-west of the Black Forest nature park in the state Baden-Württemberg. 77% of the municipality area is covered by forest, 17% is acriculural land, and the area has been renowned for its clean air since the establishment of a sanatorium for lung diseases in 1882.
The abbey of Sankt Blasien was already mentioned in 858. In 1806 the abbey was secularised and used as one of the first machine factories in Germany. After WW2 the building has become a bording school run by the order of Jesuits. The impressive dome church replaced the original abbey church which burnt down in 1768.
In summer visitors come to experience the fresh air, the forests and mountains which are habitat for a wide range of flora and fauna. In winter the area is an important winter sport arena for visitors from lower lying parts of Germany.
The town offers climatic health spa amenities, a radon spa in nearby Menzenschwand, concerts in the dome church, a wildlife park, many kilometres of walking tracks and a broad range of winter sport activities.
