Zermatt is one of the most famous villages in Switzerland. This car-free zone lies at the foot of the Matterhorn in the Valais region. Zermatt is a popular tourist destination for both mountain walking in the summer and skiing in the winter. There are hundreds of Km of walking and skiing trails, with skiing possible year round in the highest and largest summer skiing area in Europe.

Zermatt - Summer Holidays

Zermatt is surrounded by some of the most spectacular mountains in the Swiss Alps, and is popular for walking an other mountain sports.
  • Walking - over 400km of walking and hiking trails, some of which have been used by traders since the 13th century.
  • Climbing - The region has nearly 30 peaks reaching above 4,000m and thousands of people descend on Zermatt each year to climb them. Major peaks include Matterhorn (4,478 m), Parrotspitze (4432 m), Stecknadelhorn (4,241 m)
  • Mountain Biking - some of the mountain trails are suitable for mountain biking.
  • Summer Skiing - Matterhorn Glacier Paradise in Zermatt has the highest and largest summer, glacier skiing region in Europe.
  • Gornergrat - 3089m high peak served by a cog railway with stunning panoramic views of the Matterhorn, the glaciers and the Monte-Rosa massif.
  • Highest Viewpoint in Europe - travel by cable car to 3883m with panoramic views of the Swiss, Italian and French Alps.

Zermatt - Winter Skiing

Zermatt is one of the most beautiful ski resorts in the world. The car-free zone ensures a quiet and relaxing environment among some of the most awe-inspiring scenery in Europe. The entire ski region includes the Rothorn paradise (3,103m), Gornergrat (3,089m), the Matterhorn glacier paradise (3,883m) and the Schwarzsee paradise (2,583m). The Matterhorn ski area also connects with Breuil-Cervinia / Valtournenche and Val d'Aosta.

This provides ample of skiing for all ages and levels of skiers, with plenty of options for alpine skiing, snowboarding and Nordic skiing. Zermatt boast the longest skiing season in Europe, with long skiing days, and some of the longest ski runs in Europe. The longest ski run starts at the top of of the Klein Matterhorn cable car, the highest in the world at 3820m, and then journeys some 13km back down to Zermatt.

As can be seen, Zermatt holds a lot of superlatives, well earned. While there are many hotels of varying budgets, skiing in Zermatt will never by cheap, it is one of the most expensive ski resorts in Europe. Zermatt has recently begun offering a ski pass that includes part of the Saas Fee ski region.

  • Ski Runs - There are 67 runs in total, 19 beginner pistes, 33 intermediate and 15 Advanced runs.
  • Ski Lifts - 71 ski lifts uplift 64500 skiiers per hour in 14 chairlifts, 34 draglifts and 23 Gondolas/Cable cars.
  • Snow Cannon - the lower slopes are well covered by snow canons.
