Jakarta Selatan is the second largest of the five cities in Jarkarta in Indonesia. It is bounded by is bounded by Central Jakarta to the north, East Jakarta to the east, Depok to the south, West Jakarta to the north-west. Together, these five cities are collectively referred to as 'Jakarta'. To the west lies Tangerang.

Jakarta was established as a port city in the Kingdom of Sunda in the 5th century, when it was called 'Sunda Kelapa'. The first Europeans to arrive were the Portuguese in 1513, looking for a route for spices, especially black pepper. The Kingdom of Sunda formed a peace treaty, partly to defend against the rising power of the Sultanate of Demak in central Java.

This did not succeed and in 1527, Sunda Kelapa fell to Demak, and the city renamed 'Jayakarta'. The ports were incorporated into the Sultanate of Banten and grew very prosperous. Both the Dutch and English had important trading posts here. In 1619 the British were forced out by the Dutch.

During WWII the city was captured by the Japanese, and renamed 'Jakarta'. After the War, Jakarta became the capital of Indonesian following a protracted fight for Indonesian independence which finished in 1950.

• Ancol Dream Park (Taman Impian Jaya Ancol) - one of the biggest theme parks in Asia with the Dunia Fantasi, Seaworld (and the largest aquarium in South East Asia), Gelanggang Samudra (Ocean Park), resorts, hotels, beachs, marina, and great restaurants.
• Gedung Kesenian Jakarta (Jakarta Arts Theater) - meticulously restored neo-renaissance theatre with some of the best performance by both local and international artists.
• Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (Beautiful Indonesia in Little Park) - cultural theme park with exhibits from the 30 provinces and 250 cultures of Indonesia, complete with the Museum Indonesia and the Keong Emas IMAX theater.
• Museum Nasional- museum with vast collections of prehistoric, ethnographic and archaeological artifacts, including one of the largest collections of Southeast Asian ceramics and Hindu Javanese art on earth.
• Monas (National Monument) - most famous landmark in Jakarta, a 137 meter monument is located in the center of Merdeka (Freedom) square with a panoramic observation deck.
• Pasar Baru - market founded in Dutch colonial times today selling all kinds of goods.
• Presidential Palace - official residence of the Indonesian president, open to the public on weekends for free.
• Textile Museum - with a large collections of textiles from the major islands of the archipelago, including batik, ikat and kain ulos.
• Lubang Buaya - historical site marking the place where a failed coup d' etat by Partai Komunis Indonesia (Indonesian Communist Party) met a bloody end.
• Gedung Proklamasi(Proclamation Building) - historical site where Soekarno-Hatta declare Indonesian independence in 1945.
• Museum Wayang (Puppet Museum) - the history of puppetry, with displays of wayang kulit shadow puppets, three-dimensional wooden puppets and special dance masks.
• Jalan Surabaya (Surabaya Street) - lively open-air antique market on the fringes of the Menteng residential neighborhood.
• Sunda Kelapa Port / Old Harbour - a bustling hub for inter islands trade where you can find Bugis phinisi schooners, the world's last wind-powered sailing fleet used for trade.
• Ragunan Zoo - 185 hectare zoo near Pasar Minggu with a comprehensive collection of some 3600 species of wildlife from throughout Indonesua.
• Istiqlal Mosque - the biggest mosque in Southeast Asia.
• Kepulauan Seribu (Thousand Islands) - north of Jakarta in the Java Sea, these stunning islands are accessible by speed boat from Ancol marina.
• Museum Adam Malik - small museum about the life and times of Mr Adam Malik, one of the renowned figure, who represented Indonesia in the United Nations.
• Jembatan Kota Intan (Kota Intan drawbridge) - built in 1628 by the Dutch.
• Bird Markets - market selling various tropical birds in Jalan Barito in South Jakarta and Jalan Pramuka in Central Jakarta.
• Fish Market and Museum Bahari (Maritime Museum) -bustling market on the mouth of the Ciliwung river. The Museum Bahari is housed in restored Dutch warehouses dating back to the first trading post of the Dutch East Indies.
• Pulau Burung (Bird Island) - one of the Thousand Islands, so named because it looks like a bird's beak made from rocks.
• Museum Bank Mandiri - museum covering the history of banking during the Dutch Colonial era.
