Squeaky Beach - FURTHER INFORMATION
Squeaky Beach - Wilsons Promontory visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Squeaky Beach' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Victoria.
Wilsons Promontory National Park is 200km south-east from Melbourne and is one of the most popular destinations in Victoria. The park includes the southernmost point of the Australian mainland, contains Victorias largest coastal wilderness area and its 130km coastline is framed by headlands, mountains, forests and fern gullies.
The tourism hotspot in The Prom is Tidal River where most of the accommodation, a supermarket, takeaway and the park information offices are located. Many of the parks features can be explored on foot from Tidal River. Only the western flank of the park can be explored by car, the remainder of the park is only accessible on foot or by boat.
Tidal river has nearly 500 camping and caravan sites and a few Wilderness Retreats. All accommodation should be booked well in advance, i.e. up to 12months for school holidays.
The area was occupied by Aboriginals before European settlement for at least 6500 years and remains a place of spiritual significance. Most of the Promontory was reserved as a national park as early as 1898.
Over 30 species of native mammals are found in the park and the diverse vegetation varies from the coast over the mountains to the hinterland. Mount Oberon offers 360 degree views over the park and more energetic walkers can attempt the overnight walk to the famous Lighthouse.
Activities in the park include:
- Abseiling
- Birdwatching
- Bushwalking
- Canoeing / Kayaking
- Coastal Walking
- Fishing / Angling
- Four Wheel Drive Tours
- Mountain Bike Riding
- Rafting
- Rock Climbing
