Next to the Bird Display Lawn, and close to the restaurants of London Zoo, stands the unique Pestival's Termite Pavilion. London Zoo is one of the top tourist attractions in London, and this temporary 6m³, wooden structure is based on on a three-dimensional (3D) scan of an actual termite mound in Namibia, southern Africa, scaled it up to human size giving a 'termite's eye view' of home.
The Termite Pavilion was manufactured out of sustainable Austrian spruce laminate, with each layer fixed in place on top of the former, much like a 3D puzzle. On the outside various panels explain the amazing structure and function of termite mounds and society. Inside, speakers set into the walls play sounds that were recorded in an actual termite mound in Namibia.
FREE entrance to London Zoo to London Pass holders.
For insect lovers, London zoo also houses 'B.U.G.S' withover 140 species of insects, spiders and all kinds of bugs. There is also 'Butterfly Paradise', a butterfly house with live butterflies, with an emphasis on species from Africa, Southeast Asia, and Central and South America.
The Termite Pavilion project is a collaboration between Softroom Architects, Freeform Engineering, Atelier One, sound recording specialist Chris Watson and designers Haberdasherylondon.
