Antibes is a popular sea resort town on the south coast of France, close to Nice and Monaco. Founded by the Greeks in the 5th century BCE, Antibes has a good, naturally protected port and harbour, making it an important trading town. Known historically as 'Antipolis', the town was occupied by the Romans for about 500 years and turned into a major entry point into Gaul. Roman remains visible today form some of the tourist attractions.
After the departure of the Romans, Antibes was sacked by various barbarian groups and the prosperity of the town sank into obscurity until it was 'discovered' and promoted as a tourist destination in the mid 19th century. At this time, the wealthy of Europe started building luxury homes in Antibes. Since then, Antibes has developed into a popular holiday destination and resort town with numerous luxury hotels, holiday apartments, marina and good restaurants.
