Chessington - FURTHER INFORMATION

Chessington - Chessington visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Chessington' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Greater London.

Chessington lies near the south-western edge of Greater London, in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames on the Hogsmill river. The town was mentioned as 'Cisedune' and 'Cisendone' in the 1086 Doomsday Book. In 1348 a mansion house was built here but this was burned to the ground by Oliver Cromwell, and became known as Burnt Stub.

Chessinton - Chessintgon World of Adventures

Chessington is most famous, and to many only known, for the Chessington World of Adventures tourist attraction. This theme park is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the entire region, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors, especially during the holiday period.

Chessington World of Adventures has become so well known, that is is often simply marketed as 'Chessington'. The park has it's roots in the 18th century when Burnt Stub was rebuilt by the Vere Barker family as a neo-gothic Victorian mansion. The surrounding land became a zoo in 1931, known as Chessington Zoo. The zoo was taken over by the Tussauds Group in 1978 and incorporated into a theme park, which has continued to expand and innovate to this day. The original mansion still exists, and houses the Hocus Pocus Hall haunted house ride within Chessington World of Adventures.
