Cumbernauld lies north-east of Glasgow in Strathclyde. It is a new town, created in 1956, and acts as a popular satellite, commuter town for Glasgow itself. The town lies on the high point of the Scottish central belt burns, with streams running east from here to River Clyde and east to the River Forth.
Though much of the development is new, the history of Cumbernauld stretches back thousands of years. In Roman times it was a settlement near the Antonine Wall, the furthest and most northerly boundary of the Roman Empire. The Normans built a motte and bailey castle here in the 12 century, the motte of Cumbernauld castle can still be seen today.
Cumbernauld was popular with royalty who would come for hunting in Caledonian Forest nearby. in the 18th century Cumbernauld House was built on the old site of Cumbernauld Castle, near to Cumbernauld village.

- Palacerigg Country Park - 300 hectares of grassland, woodlands, moorlands and ponds with loads of wildlife and tree-top walks.
- Central Scotland Shooting School - purpose built clay pigeon shooting site with clay target coaching, clubhouse and top class facilities.
- Cumbernauld Outdoor Activity Centre - contains the 'World of Wings', the largest Bird's of Prey Centre in Scotland as well as archery, paintballing, 4x4 driving and much more.
- Roman Forts - there are remains of Roman Forts at points along the River Kelvin.
- Barr Hill - 155m high hill covered in part by Barhill woods on which there are 2 Roman forts, disused quarries and a dismantled railway.
- Cumbernauld Museum - small museum in Cumbernauld library with a history of the region since Roman times. Cumbernauld Glen - ancient woodlands in the heart of Cumbernauld, divided into Cumbernauld Glen and Vault Glen.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
Car: Cumbernauld is 13 miles northeast of Glasgow center and 15 miles southwest of Grangemouth. It is 40 miles from Edinburgh.
