Promenade des Anglais, Hôtel Négresco, Nice, France - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
At the beginning of the XIXth century it is a modest muddy and gravelly path, 2 metres broad, named «path of the English», linking up the Right Bank of the Paillon with the suburb of the Croix de Marble. It is build by the wintering English community and financed they says by the reverend Lewis Way.
In 1854-1856, the way takes the name of Promenade des Anglais and is extended to Magnan according to the plan of the architect François Aune. Important works are then done, it is enlarged of 11m except the slope to form a path there with double row of trees. Promenade is extended to Sainte-Hélène in 1878, Carras in 1882, and finally the Var, in 1903.
Villas and their gardens are destroyed little by little and replace with luxury hotels, hotels and casinos, or residential buildings. The car traffic develops and begins posing problems from 1920s. The municipality makes do important jobs between the Opera and the boulevard Gambetta, in 1929-1931, which give to promenade the current face. Widening is continued between the boulevard Gambetta and the avenue Ferber in 1949-19532.
