Smoky Bay is a small settlement on the West Coast of the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia, between Ceduna and Streaky Bay. It was called Smoky Bay by Captain Matthew Flinders in 1802, who saw smoke from fires lit by the Aboriginal inhabitants of the area at that time. The first European inhabitants were whalers. At one time it was a port, and the Smoky Bay Jetty was built in 1913.
Today, Smoky Bay has become a popular tourist destination on the Eyre Peninsula. The port has closed, but the jetty remains and is popular for fishing and angling. As of 1988, Smoky Bay started growing oysters, which has increased the tourist trade. Accommodation is from a number of holiday cottages and the Smoky Bay Caravan Park.
