North Tybee Beach at the mouth of the Savannah River - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT

This is early in the morning and the beach is almost empty. This is an excellent place to be if you like watching ships enter the river.

North Tybee Beach at the mouth of the Savannah River - FURTHER INFORMATION

North Tybee Beach at the mouth of the Savannah River - Tybee Island visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'North Tybee Beach at the mouth of the Savannah River' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Georgia.

The beaches on Tybee Island in Georgia are divided into North Beach, shown in this panorama, and South Beach, where there is a pavilion. The North Beach is at the mouth of the Savannah River, which starts around 350 miles away in the Appalachian Mountains.

'Tybee' is the Anglicised version of 'duh bee', the Euchee Indian for 'salt', thus Tybee Island means 'salt island'. It is a low lying barrier island facing the Atlantic, bathed in sunshine along which runs a sandy beach over 3 miles long.

Because of this, Tybee Island has become a popular holiday destination attracting even film stars who come to relax on the beach, swim in the sea and watch sea turtles and dolphins. Much of the sea-front has been developed with various hotels, motels and vacation apartments, the most expensive and luxurious of which have fantastic ocean views. Tybee is a resort town complete with a full range of restaurants, modern hotels and motels, luxurious condominiums, and quaint inns and cottages, with various activities and attractions for the whole family.
