Murray Sunset National Park is the second largest park in Victorias covering 633,000 hectares of Australian outback. The park stretches from the Murray River at Lindsay Island in the north to the Pink Lakes in the south near Underbool. From east west, the park covers about 160km from A69 to the Victoria-South Australia border.

The Pink Lake area of the park is accessible for 2WD vehicles while the northern part with its red sand dunes is only accessible for 4WD vehicles. The park has a fascinating history, abundant wildlife and beautiful spring wildflowers, it protects 183 threatened plant and animal species.

In the early 19s camel teams were used for over 20 years to transport salt from the Pink Lakes. The area was occupied by indigenous people for thousands of years and was declared a National Park in 1991. Murray Sunset NP is attractive to walkers as it is the nearest semi-arid region to Melbourne.

Murray Sunset National Park - Attractions

  • Walking - The park has several trails, walkers should contact park Rangers for current local conditions. Most of the park trails are only suitable for 4WD vehicles.
  • Pink Lakes Area - salt lakes in the northern section of the park coloured pink by carotene secreted by algae. Not recommended in the summer when the lakes evaporate. These lakes include Lake Becking, Lake Crosbie, Lake Hardy and Lake Kenyon.
  • Lake Crosbie - the largest of the lakes within Murray Sunset NP with a camp site.
  • Salt Museum - remains of commercial salt harvesting that took place between 1916 and 1979 on the edges of Lake Crosbie.
  • Lindsay Island - area of small creeks, swamps, billabongs and floodplains located in the northwest part of the park in the riverine plain of the Murray River and Lindsay River with good fishing for golden perch, Murray cod and yabbies.
  • Aboriginal Heritage - the area of Murray Sunset National Park has been inhabited by Aborigines for thousands of years and numerous shell middens, scar trees, oven mounds and burial grounds are found within the park.
  • Rare Wildlife - the park is home to Victoria's largest flower, the Murray Lily, and Australia's rarest bird, the Black-Eared Miner as well as Mallee Fowl, Pink Cockatoos and White-browed Tree creepers.
  • Diverse Habitiats - Murray Sunset NP contains a mixture of billabongs and floodplains near the Murray River, grasslands, native pine woodlands, Mallee covered dunes and saltbush flats.
  • Camping - camp sites can be found on the southern shore of Lake Crosbie, Mount Crozier, Lake Becking, Rocket Lake and Mopoke Hut as well as some other remote sites. Shearer's Hut offers hostel-style accommodation with cooking facilities, bunks and a hot shower. Avoid resting and camping under River Red Gum trees which can shed branches without warning. Take plenty of water.
  • Guided Activites - include bicycle touring, bird watching, bushwalking, canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking and rafting.


TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE

Car: All access is on unsealed roads from the Mallee or Sturt Highways and can be travelled by 2WD vehicle but for most tracks 4WDs are required. Best access to the Pink Lakes is from the small town of Underbool approximately 70 kilometres west of Ouyen. Murray Sunset National Park is about 500km north of Melbourne and 300km south of Adelaide.
