The Salle des Mariages (Wedding Room) in the Hôtel de Ville (town hall) was extensively painted by Jean Cocteau at the request of Sir Francis Palmero, the mayor of Menton. The task took nearly two years, between 1957-58, and transformed the Wedding Room into an amazing work of art, and a popular tourist attraction.
Jean Cocteau was responsible not only for the paintings, but also the the carpets, doors and other furnishings within the room. The overarching theme is of eternal love depicted in meandering lines. The central characters, a woman and a Menton man in a fisherman's hat, adorn the back wall.
The side panels display the consequences of negligence in marriage, the men become wicked beasts and death and sadness ensues. This is portrayed along lines of Greek mythology and tragedy involving Eurydice and Orpheus.
The Wedding Room is open to the public daily, entrance fees apply.
