Old Fishmarket Close in Edinburgh was once considered a 'a steep, narrow stinking ravine' containing a lively fish and poultry market. It runs south from the Royal Mile next to St Giles Cathedral to Cowgate.

Old Fishmarket Close was home to some colourful characters in Edinburgh's past. The City Hangman, or 'Doomster', live here, the last being John High who died in 1817. Earlier, in 1586, Geroge Heriot, the founder of the George Heriot School and Hospital lived here. It is also rumoured that Daneil Defoe worked here as an English secret agent in the early 18th century.

Today, Old Fishmarket Close has been gentrified, containing some cafés and the Old Fishmarket Close Apartments, popular as luxury city centre holiday apartments right in the center of Edinburgh, close to all the main Edinburgh attractions.
