Our Dynamic Earth earth opened in 1999, funded as part of the rejuvenation project of the lower Royal Mile area. The steel-masted and fabric building stands beside the Scottish Parliament Building, next to Holyrood Park below the Salisbury Crags. The design and structure is reminiscent of the Dome in London.
Topics explored with Our Dynamic Earth include:
- Earthscape of Scotland - Scottish geography and geology.
- State of the Earth - plate tectonics, volcanoes and earthquakes.
- Time Machine - journey back 15 billion years to before the Universe began.
- How It All Started - formation of galaxies and planets using Hubble Telescope images to tell the story.
- Restless Earth - landscape of a new-born earth-like planet.
- Shaping the Surface - impact of glaciation and ice ages.
- Polar Extremes - exploring the Antarctic and Arctic regions of Earth.
- Casualties and Survivors - how changing geography and climate caused extinctions and how the survivors adapted.
