The Grazer Uhrturm is one of the top attractions and landmarks in Graz. This 28m high clock tower stands on top of the Schloßberg in the center of the city. First built in the 13th century, the current tower dates from 1560. Originally the clock-faces only had a long hour hand, and a shorter minute hand was added later. Thus the Uhrturm is unusual in that the lengths of the hands are revered to the norm.

Grazer Uhrturm was ransomed during the 1809 French invasion when Napoleon's armies were paid 2,987 florins and 11 farthings to prevent the tower from being destroyed. Within the clocktower are three bells, the Hour Bell (Stundenglocke), striking every hour, is the oldest bell in Graz, installed in the Uhrturm in 1382. The other two bells are the Fire Bell (Feuerglocke - 1645) was rung to warn of fire, and the Sinners Bell (Armensünderglocke ~1440) was rung during executions and, in the 19th century, to start the curfew, earning it the name 'Lumpenglocke'.

Today, the Grazer Uhrturm is a central attraction in Graz, not least for the dramatic, panoramic views over the rest of the city from the top of the Schlossberg.
