Maraitrost Basilica sits at the top of the Angelus stair on top of Purberg, a 469m high hill overlooking Mariatrost on the outskirts of Graz. This Catholic church is one of the recommended tourist attractions of Graz, easily accessible by tram from the city center.
The church is one of the most famous pilgrimage sites in the whole of Styria, with a venerated statue of Mary housed within. Mariatrost Basilica is a highly decorated Baroque church, built between 1714 and 1724. Notable features inside the church include a pulpit by Veit Königer (1730/31) and ornate frescoes by Lukas von Schram and Johann Baptist Scheidt on the ceilings and dome.
From the outside, the most notable features are the two, yellow-painted, 61m high towers behind which rises the dome of the church. Around the church is a former monastery. The Angelus Stairway leading up to Mariatrost Basilica has 216 steps, with resting places and sculptures en route. At the bottom of the steps is the Tramway Museum Graz and the terminal station for Line 1 of the modern tram system.
