Wentworth - FURTHER INFORMATION
Wentworth - Wentworth visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Wentworth' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from New South Wales.
Wentworth lies on the confluence of the Murray River and Darling River on the border between New South Wales and Victoria.
Founded in 1879, Wentworth is named after William Charles Wentworth, a famous politician and explorer from New South Wales. The town has been flooded on several occasions when one, or both, of the rivers burst their banks. It was an important river port serving the surrounding area, and the largest river port in Australia 1890 and 1900. Significance of the town faded once the railways arrived. Today, Wentworth is a tourist destination, particularly for those seeking outback experiences, and a popular rest point for those visiting Broken Hill, one of the most famous mining towns in the region.
