The Meadows are a large public park a short distance south of Edinburgh city center and Edinburgh Castle. It is divided into Meadow Park, West Meadow Park and East Meadow Park, and contains wide open grassland with by tree-lined paths, a children's playground, a croquet club, tennis courts and cricket pitches. It is well placed with good views of Arthur's Seat and Edinburgh Castle.
Until the mid 17th century, The Meadows was actually a loch, called either Burgh Loch or South Loch, which provided most of the fresh water then used by Edinburgh. This changed after 1621 when piped water arrived in Edinburgh, and the loch was partially drained in the 18th century.
During the 19th century, The Meadows hosted football with both Heart of Midlothian F.C. and Hibernian F.C playing here. Hibernian now play in Easter Road. During WWII the meadows were converted into allotments to grow food for the war effort. It was re-turfed in the 1960's.
Today, The Meadows plays an important part in the life of Edinburgh. Every March, The Meadows host 1,000 runners taking part in the annual Meadows Marathon, a charity half marathon and five kilometre fun run. It also hosts the Edinburgh MoonWalk where up to 12,000 people walk raising money for breast cancer research and treatment. During the Edinburgh Festival various Fringe events take place in The Meadows.
