Nelson's Monument is a monument and tourist attraction on the top of Calton Hill in Edinburgh. It was built between 1807-15 on the highest point of Calton Hill to commemorate Nelson's victory over the French and Spanish fleets at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The time-ball was added to the top of the monument in 1853. Nelson's Monument was last refurbished in 2009.

Nelson's Monument - the View

Nelson's Monument is 32 metres (105 ft) high, with 143 steps leading to a public viewing gallery near the top giving stunning views over the city. From the top you can clearly see the National Monument and Observatory which also stand on Calton Hill. To the south are the Salisbury Crags and Arthur's Seat in Holyrood Park. Beneath Salisbury crags you can make out the skyline of the Scottish Parliament Building and the Palace of Holyrood House.

Moving round to the west the view takes in various church spires, including that of St Giles Cathedral and then Edinburgh Castle, the top tourist attraction in the city beyond St Andrews House and Waverley Station. Next round is a direct view down Princes Street and over Edinburgh New Town to the Firth of Forth.

Nelson's Monument - Memorial Plaque

A memorial plaque on the monument reads: 'To the memory of Vice-Admiral Horatio Lord Viscount Nelson, and of the great victory of Trafalgar, too dearly purchased with his blood, the grateful citizens of Edinburgh have erected this monument: not to express their unavailing sorrow for his death; nor yet to celebrate this matchless glories of his life; but, by his noble example, to teach their sons to emulate what they admire, and, like him, when duty requires it, to die for their country.
