Medina-Sidonia - History

Situated near Cádiz in Spain, Medina-Sidonia is an ancient, hilltop settlement, most likely an 'Asido' founded by the Phoenicians. It was occupied by the Moors for a long time, and these facts are reflected in the name with 'Medina' being Moorish for 'City' and 'Sidonia' meaning 'of Sidon'.

The Romans controlled much of the region by the 3rd century BC and at that time Medina-Sidonia was called 'Asido Caesarina'. In 712 Medina-Sidonia was caputred by Muslim forces led by Musa ibn Nusair. It then became the capital of the cora (province) of Sidonia in the emirate of Spain. The Moors held the city util 1264 when it was taken by Alfonso X of Castile and became a stronghold along the frontier with the last Muslim country in the Iberian peninsula. In 1440 it was granted dukedom status ruled by the Dukes of Medina-Sidonia.

The ancient history of Medina-Sidonia is reflected in some of the sights and attractions found here which include Roman sites, and ancient Moorish castle on top of the hill with Roman elements, Moorish arches around the town and various Baroque buildings.
