Port de Sanitja - FURTHER INFORMATION
Port de Sanitja - Menorca visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Port de Sanitja' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Balearic Islands.
Port de Sanitja is on the north coast of Menorca, between Santa Teresa and Cala Viola de Llevant at the base of a long peninsula that stretches north to S'Olla and the Cap de Cavalleria lighthouse. The little harbour here is unassuming, with a basic boat launch and a few boats on the water. This is a far removed from the large marinas on other parts of the island.
However, the current state of Port de Sanitja belies it's importance in the past, which dates back to Roman and Phoenician times. Lying at the end of a long inlet and protected from winter weather the port was very strategic and mentioned by Pliny the Elder as one of the three towns he mentioned, then called 'Sannicera'. This is a variant of several names by which Sanitja has been known (other variants include Samnicera, Janissari, Sanisera, Senija, Sanitja).
Roman ruins have been found around the area, and the Ecomuseu Cap de Cavalleria (Museum of Cap de Cavalleria) has been established nearby to display some of the finds. The port also contains the remains of a Mosque and an English fort. From here the Cami de Far road continues north past Cala Viola de Llevant before terminating at the northernmost point of Menorca at S'Olla and 578,Cap de Cavalleria, where there is a lighthouse.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
From either Cuitadella or Mahon, take the C-721 to Es Mercadal and then the cf-3 north past Binissarret and Binissaria. The cf-3 continues past Estŕncia d'en Magister and passes through Cavalleria when it becomes the Cami de Far.
The alternative is to head 7km north from Es Mercadal along the C-723 (Me-15) and then west along the road signposted for Cala Tirant and Cap de Cavalleria. This small lane joins the cf-3 a little beyond Cala Tirant.
