The Catedral de San José (Cathedral of St Joseph) is one of the top tourist attractions in Antigua Guatemala. It stands across from Central Park in the heart of the city. The original Roman Catholic church was built in 1541 with a thatched roof that was replaced with a wooden. This was badly damaged in the 1583 and 1600 earthquakes and it was decided to demolish the old church and build again.

The current building dates from 1669 and it was consecrated in 1680 with a Baroque façade and Renaissance details. With further additions, by 1743 this was one of the largest cathedrals in Central America. However, the Catedral de San José was badly damaged in the 1773 Guatemala earthquake, though the two towers at the front remain intact. Two of the chapels were restored in the 19th century and below the cathedral is a crypt and some tunnels whose purpose is still a mystery.
