Sunrise is one of the cities in the conurbation that stretches up the east coast of Florida from Florida City, past Miami and on north through Fort Lauderdale to West Palm Beach. Originally called 'Sunset', the name was changed to Sunrise to help developers attract retirees to the region. The center of Sunrise is about 15 miles from the coast but only 3.5 miles from the Everglades Wildlife Management Area.
Sunrise - Tourist Attractions
There are a few attractions within Sunrise itself, but nearby are also various beaches and further inland are a few National Parks. Among the top tourist attractions at Sunrise are:- Sawgrass Mills Mall - one of the largest shopping malls in the USA.
- Sawgrass Sanctuary - 20 acre park with hiking and bicycling trail, fishing pier, boardwalk and learning center.
- Wannado City - indoor theme and role-play adventure park.
- Markham Park - 666 acre park with the Fox Observatory, a radio controlled airplane field, dog park, biking and jogging trails, fishing and boating areas, a tennis and racquetball center, volleyball, a swimming pool complex with a mist pool, snack bar, lockers and showers/restrooms and shooting range.
- Sunrise Country Club - stylish country club with golf and other activities. Golf Courses - Sunrise is also home to the Sunrise Lakes Phase IV Golf Club (9 holes) and Sunrise Lakes Phase III golf course (9 holes).
- Shopping - in countless shops, boutiques and outlet stores.
- Big Cypress National Preserve - 720,000 acres of swamp with various outdoor activities, wildlife, ranger led programmes and guided tours. About 50 miles west of Sunrise.
- Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve - 80 miles west of Sunrise, a strand of swamp forest covering 20 x 5 miles full of rare flora and fauna.
- Beaches - numerous beach parks and beaches line the coast. Nearby ones include John U Lloyd Beach State Park, North Beach, Hollywood Beach and Hilsboro Beach.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
Road: Sunrise is 11 miles west of Fort Lauderdale near the IH-595 and IH-75. It is 40 miles north of Miami.
