Bampton - FURTHER INFORMATION

Bampton - Bampton visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Bampton' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Oxfordshire.

Bampton is an important and ancient village in Oxfordshire, established during the Iron Age. It is often considered part of the Cotswalds. During Saxon and Medieval times, Bampton grew in importance with Bampton Parish covering Weald, Lew, Aston, Cote, Shifford, Chimney and Lower Haddon.

In the 14th century the Earl of Pembroke obtained permission from Edward II to re-model his house at Bampton into a castle. Part of the castle gatehouse & curtain wall form part of the current farmhouse at Ham Court. In spite it's prominence, Bampton did not capitalize on the Medieval wool industry, loosing out to the likes of Witney and Burford.
