Mount Hutt forms the western flank of the valley entrance of the Rakaia River at the point where it leaves the Southern Alps to begin its journey across the plains of Canterbury in New Zealand. The mountain peak is 2086m above sea level and on clear days it is possible to see all the way across the plains to the Pacific Ocean. Mt Hutt is home to the Mount Hutt ski area during the winter months.
In the summer, the area is popular for tramping and hiking, with the Southern Alps providing a stunning backdrop. Only 30km south of Mount Hutt is Mount Somers and Lord of the Rings country; the setting for Eldras, capital of the Rohan Riders, was on Mount Sunday near to Mount Somers.
Mount Hutt - Skiing
Mt Hutt offers one of the largest vertical drops (683m) for skiers in New Zealand. The Mount Hutt Ski area covers 365 Hectares over 25 skiable routes, with 25% of the terrain considered suitable for beginners, 50% for intermediate and 25% for advanced skiers. 42 Hectares of the resort are covered by snow cannon and the longest run is 2km.For advanced skiers there are the added attractions of the Double Black Diamond runs of South Face or the Rakaia Chutes as well as helisking options.
The resort has a licensed brasserie, Huber's Hut and the Sky High Cafe. There is a snowsports and ski school with both ski and snow board hire locally available. Due to its location, Mount Hutt skiing is a popular day trip for Christchurch residents.

Road: Mount Hutt is on the 77 'Scenic' Highway, about 90km southwest of Christchurch and 110km northwest of Timaru.
