Weed is a small town in Siskiyou County, northern California.The town has about 3000 inhabitants and is about 10 miles (16 km) west-northwest of Mount Shasta on Interstate Highway 5, the second tallest volcano in the Cascade Range. The town is named after Abner Weed, who established a wood mill in the area in 1897. In recent times, income from logging has taken a back-seat to income from tourism. Weed is surrounded by various parks, mountain, rivers and lakes that draw people all year round.

Weed - Tourist Attractions

Almost all the tourist attractions around Weed are outdoors, including trout fishing, walking, hiking, camping and biking. In the winter the nearby mountains also offer skiing. Among the top tourist attractions around Weed include:
  • Mount Shasta - 4,322m high mountain at the southern end of the cascades in Siskiyou County. Popular for climbing year round and backcountry skiing in the winter.
  • Castle Crags - found along the Siskiyou Trail in Castle Crags State Park these dramatic crags form a dramatic backdrop and challenging climb.
  • Trinity Alps - forming part of the Trinity Alps Wilderness, part of the Pacific Coast Ranges with peaks ranging from 411m - 2741m.
  • Mossbrae Falls - 15m high and 46m wide waterfall cascading into the Sacramento River at the end of a mile-long hiking trail along the Union Pacific Railroad.
  • Lake Siskiyou - reservoir formed by Box Canyon Dam on the Sacramento River and used for various recreation.
  • Castle Lake - Glacial lake (cirque) in the Klamath Mountains accessed by a 7 mile road from Lake Siskiyou.
  • Lake Shasta - formed by the Shasta Dam across the Sacramento River, it is the largest body of water in California.
  • Lava Beds National Monument - found on the northeastern flank of the Medicine Lake Volcano, the region has numerous, textbook, volcanic formations accessible to the public, including lava tube caves, fumaroles, cinder cones, spatter cones, pit craters, maars and volcanic fields.
  • Klamath National Forest - national forest with continuous stands of ponderosa pine, Jeffrey pine, Douglas fir, red fir, white fir and incense cedar. Old growth forest is estimated to cover some 168,000 acres (680 km2).
