The current version of the Forti de São Tiago (St James Fort) in Bertioga is not the original fort on the site. It dates from the 18th century, having been rebuilt out of stone and lime and completed in 1710. At the time, the rectangular fort, which has watchtowers at the corners, contained 11 cannon defending the entrance to Bertioga Canal and the Rio Itapanhau. Today, in quieter times, it offers a good viewpoint over the beach below and out to sea and is one of the tourist attractions in Bertioga, a town famous for the Festa Nacional do Índio (Brazil's National Indian Festival) which takes place in April.
