Hillston is a small town on the Kidman Way with a population of approximately 1,000 in an area which was described by explorer John Oxley as uninhabitable and useless for all purposes of civilised man.
Oxley obviously got it wrong because Hillston was a place where stock could cross the Lachlan River and the town was established in 1863 to remain to this day a service centre for surrounding pastoral properties. Other produce includes cotton, citrus and vegetables grown with the help of irrigation.
Before European settlement the area was occupied by Wiradjuri Aboriginal people. Nearby gold and copper finds and the arrival of the railway helped the development of the town. Hillston has seen boom times, has survived repeated decline and presents itself to visitors with nicely maintained buildings, a clean and welcoming town centre, a man made lake for water sports and walks along Lachlan River.
