This shrine is in the center of the one way system of Amlapura. The one way system here can be quite confusing as the signage on the roads is less than obvious and clear if you do not already know where you are going.

Panorama from the shrine at the center of Amlapura in Bali. Amlapura is the principle, and largest, town in the Karangasem administrative regency of Bali. As such it is found in East Bali near the north of the island, just south of Gunung Lempuyang (Mount Lempuyang) volcano.

Amlapura was previously called Karangasem. The name was changed following an erruption of Mount Agung in 1963 after so that the evil spirits would be confused and unable to bury the town in volcanic ash. Mount Agung is the largest volcano on Bali, rising to a height of 3142m.

The Puri Agung Karangasem Palace found at Amlapura was the residence of the King of Karangasem. It is open to visitors. This is one of three palaces built here, the others being Puri Agung, built by the last King of Karangasem, and Anak Agung Anglurah Ketut, built around 1900.

Most people come to Amlapura travelling north from Semarapura. From here a small road heads towars the east coast and the Water Palace at Ujung. The other road from Amlapura continues north between Mount Agung volcano and Mount Lempuyang volcano to the north coast of Bali.
