Ris-Orangis lies in the southern suburbs of Paris, about 14 miles south of the city center, just north of Evry. The commune was formed in 1793 by the merger of Ris and Orangis, inhabitants of Ris-Orangis are known locally as 'Rissois'.
Ris-Orangis - Places of Interest
Ris-Orangis is not a tourist destination, but does have a number of local places of interest attractions, including:- Golf Club de Bondoufle
- Le Parc - small park with childrens play area.
- Forest of Sénart - covering 3,500 hectares in Essonne this protected woodland is very popular with locals, and is visited by about 2 million people a year.
- Lac de Viry-Châtillon - popular lake north of Ris-Orangis with various boating and water activities.
- Fleury-Mérogis Prison (Maison d'arrêt de Fleury-Mérogis) - not really a tourist attraction, this prison in Fleury-Mérogis is the largest in Europe housing up to 3,800 inmates.
- Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois Russian Cemetery (Cimetière de Liers) - formerly an 18th century farm, the land became a Russian Orthodox cemetery in 1926 and contains Dormition Church, built by Albert Benois in the late 1930's. Université d'Evry - created in 1991 the university as over 10,000 students.

- Saint Germain les Corbeil Golf Club - containing 18 holes and designed by Pierrick Drancourt.
