Serangan Island Mangrove Swamp - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
I have never been to a mangrove swamp before and was not expecting to find one on Bali. It was great to be able to explore a little as the tide came in. Which it did quite fast, and a tripod on mud flats was soon standing in an inch or more of water. Oh, to have had a boat to explore the area more.
Serangan Island Mangrove Swamp - FURTHER INFORMATION
Serangan Island Mangrove Swamp - Bali visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Serangan Island Mangrove Swamp' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Lesser Sunda Islands.
Panorama from Serangan Island (Pulau Serangan) in Bali, also known as Turtle Island. This panoramic photograph was taken from from the mangrove swaps, part of the area of Bali known as the Suwungwas.
Serangan Island got the name Turtle Island as sea turtles used to lay eggs on the shoreline around the island. Sadly, over development and other pressures have seen off the turtles and none come to Serangan any more.
Serangan Island is linked to the mainland by a long bridge. Access to the island is monitored by an unofficial guard post manned by locals who charge visitors a small entrance fee to get onto the island. The island is home to the Pura Sakenan (Sakenan Temple).
There are good views from Serangan over the waters to Benoa Harbour and the island is renown for the sunsets that can be watched from here.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
Head south from Sanuror Denpasar City (or east from Kuta) to Pesanggaran, then follow signs to Serangan. On a festival day a steady stream of traffic will cross the bridge heading from Sakenan temple.
An alternative route is to pay someone to take you by boat from Tanjung Benoa.
