Properly called the 'Cattedrale di San Zeno', the Duomo di Pistoia (Pistoia Cathedral) is one of the top tourist attractions in Pistoia. Built in the 10th century on the edge of the Piazza del Duomo, it is the seat of the Bishop of Pistoia and has a Romanesque façade, nave and two side-aisles, with a presbytery and crypt. It is first mentioned in 923, but suffered greatly over the centuries, being damaged by fire in the the 12th and early 13th centuries and then by earthquake in 1298.
Pistoia Cathedral - Art and Artefacts
Within Pistoia Cathedral are several notable works of arts and other artefacts, indluding:- Altar of Saint James, built between 1287 - 1316 and embossed with silver, housed within the Crucifix Chapel.
- Triptych of Crucifixion between the Madonna, Sts. John, Jerome and James dating from 1424.
- Crucifixion (1274) by Coppo di Marcovaldo with 6 other panels showing scenes from the event.
- Monument of Cardinal Niccolò Forteguerri started by Andrea del Verrocchio and finished by Lorenzo Lotti after Verrocchio's death.
- Presbytery frescos painted by Domencio Cresti in 1602, including Father in Glory, Fall of the Rebel Angels, Fall of Adam and the Annunciation
