Colan - Tourist Attractions
The main attraction of interest in Colan is the Church of St Colan, which was first built in 1250, though the current building dates from 1360. The church contains two brasses, one depicting Francis Bluet with his wife, 13 sons and 9 daughters, dated 20 May 1572.The second brass shows John Coswarth (or Cosowartha) Receiver General of the Duchy of Cornwall in 1575. This contains a bullet hole, reputedly either being caused by a Cromwell sympathiser shooting the brass, or a disgruntled and rejected suitor trying to kill a woman on her wedding day, and missing.
Also near to Colan is Fir Hill Manor, once a beautiful house but now a ruin after nearly 100 years of neglect and undermining by a stream. There are numerous other ancient tumuli and ruins in the area, one being the ancient settlement on a buff viewpoint overlooking Porth Reservoir, and numerous ruins in Colan Woods.
