Loch Lomond is one of the most popular lochs in Scotland, lined with secluded bays, tiny villages and backed by mountains. Within the loch are numerous islands and the loch itself is home to all kinds of water sports from fishing, sailing, boating, water-skiing, diving and kayaking. In the summer months thousands of people come to Loch Lomond to enjoy the nature and relax. Several companies around the loch offer boat charter, cruises, speed boat tours and even seaplane tours. Many of the villages have holiday accommodation, bed and breakfast (B&B) or small, well kept hotels for visitors. There are also a number of campsites around the loch.

About Loch Lomond

Loch Lomond is known as 'Loch Laomainn' in Scottish Gaelic. The loch is 24 miles long and between 0.75 and 5.0 miles wide. It has an average depth of about 37m, reaching a maximum of 190m. It has the largest surface area of any lake in the UK, and is only surpassed by Loch Ness in volume. In the loch is Inchmurrin, the largest lake island in Britain. Loch Lomond is now part of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park and on the eastern shore stands Ben Lomond, the southernmost of the Scottish Munros with a height of 974m.

Most of the population, and travel destinations, around Loch Lomond are on the western shore. These include the villages of Aldochlay, Arden, Inverbeg, Inveruglas, Luss, Stuckgowan and Tarbet. At the southern end of the loch are Balloch and Alexandria.

Islands of Loch Lomond

There are around 60 islands of varying sizes on Loch Lomond. Some may not be considered true islands as they are only visible when the water levels are low. Most are privately owned but open to the public. Dogs are not permitted on many of the islands, and visitors must respect the wildlife and unique nature of Loch Lomond when visiting. The main islands of interest on Loch Lomond include Bucinch (island of goats), Clairinch & Keppinch, Ellanderroch, Fraoch Island, Inchcailloch, Inchconnachan (Colquhoun's Island), Inchcruin (Round Island), Inchfad (Long Island), Inchgalbraith , Inchlonaig (Yew tree Island), Inchmoan (peat island), Inchmurrin (St Murrin's island), Inchtavannach (Island of Monks), Inveruglass, Tarbet Isle (Isle of the Portage) and Eilean I Vow (Eilean à Bhuth).
