Goring-on-Thames village (often simply referred to as 'Goring') lies next to the River Thames in South Oxfordshire, near to the Goring Gap, a gap in the Chiltern Hills through which the Thames, and much of the main transport links, flow. It is twinned with Streatley on the other side of the river, and linked to it by the Goring and Streatley Bridge shown in this picture.
Goring-on-Thames - Tourist Attractions
Goring is a quaint village, with a number of interesting churches and buildings. In the surrounding area are many places of interest. Some popular tourist attractions around Goring include:- Saint Thomas of Canterbury Church - early 12th century Norman church building with a 15th century bell tower.
- Augustinian Priory - remains of a 12th century nun's priory demolished during the dissolution of monasteries under Henry VIII.
- Goring Free Church - 18th century chapel now forming the church hall of the new church built alongside it.
- Goring Gap - dramatic gap in the chalk hills separating the Berkshire Downs from the Chiltern Hills, cut by meltwater during the end of the last ice-age and changing the course of the River Thames.
- Lardon Chase - at the top of steep hills to the west of Goring with dramatic views over the Goring Gap and River Thames.
- Goring and Streatly Golf Club - 18-hole, par 71 golf course established in 1895.
- Thames Path - footpath running along the River Thames, linking all the towns and villages en route.
- Walking, Cycling, Riding - there are numerous public footpaths and bridle ways throughout the surrounding countryside, ideal for a day out with a pub lunch.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
Road: Goring lies on the B4526 road, about 3 miles from Pangbourne and Whitchurch-on-Thames. It is about 8 miles northwest of Reading and 16 miles south of Oxford.
Train: Goring Station, with direct trains to Oxford, Reading and London.
Boat: Along the River Thames.
