Auchtertyre viewpoint - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
This was well worth the short climb, and gives a great point from which to appreciate the surrounding area. My kind of panorama!
Auchtertyre viewpoint - FURTHER INFORMATION
Auchtertyre viewpoint - Scottish Highlands visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Auchtertyre viewpoint' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Highland.
Panorama from a viewpoint on leaving Kyle of Lochalsh up the A890 in the Scottish Highlands . There are 2 ways out of Kyle on the mainland, the A87 heads from the Skye bridge down alongside Loch Alsh and then Loch Duich. The A890 junction just past the village of Auchtertyre heads up over Gleann Udalain to Stromeferry on Loch Carron. Just a quarter mile from here at the top of this hill, the road passes through a cutting of exposed mica schist, which is worth slowing down a bit for if you like geology. Eventually this road joins the A832 at Achnasheen leading on to Garve and Loch Luichart, Ullapool, Dingwall and Inverness.
From this vantage point, as shown in this panoramic photograph, there is a great view over Lochalsh Dam, Allt Gleann Udalain and Gleann Udalain. In the foreground, the villages of Auchtertyre, Kirkton and Avernish (where one can visit the riding stables and trek along the shoreline). As the road curves away downhill a part of Loch Alsh is in view. Parts of the Isle of Skye are visible in the background including the south end of the Cuillin ridge and the mountain of Beinn Na Callaich behind Kyleakin village and harbour. To the far left, the view extends into Kintail where the western end of the Five Sisters ridge is visible at Morvich. Nearby is Eilean Donan Castle, home of the clan MacRae, at Dornie.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
The A890 runs between Kyle of Lochalsh and Achnasheen in Scotland. On the final descent towards Kyle is a parking lot. Walk a little back up the road and up one of the hillocks beside it for this view.
