Dorohoi is one of the larger towns in northern Botoşani County in Romania. Lying on the banks of the Jijia River, close to the borders with both Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, it is first mentioned in a treaty signed between signed between Moldavian voievode, Alexandru cel Bun, and the King of Poland and Hungary in 1408.
Dorohoi - Tourist Attractions
Among the local landmarks is a church built by Ştefan cel Mare. Dorohoi also has a darker past, when the Romanian military units carried out a pogrom against the local Jews in 1940, before Romania entered WWII and was occupied by Germans. More information about that incident can be found on Wikipedia.In 2010 Dorohoi suffered greatly from flooding after a week of unusually heavy rainfall in Balkan country. The floods washed away a number of roads and buldings, killing 6 people.
TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE
Road: Dorohoi in at the juction of several large roads including the 291B, 291C, 291D, 292 and 293. It is 40km north of Botoşani (29B highway) and 35km south of Darabani. Dorohoi is about 30km south of the Ukraine border.
