The Dundas Aqueduct at Monkton Combe carries the Kennet and Avon Canal across both the Avon river. The Kennet and Avon Canal links the River Avon at Bath with the River Kennet at Newbury. These link to other waterways effectively allowing navigation from the River Thames at Reading all the way to the Floating Harbour at Bristol. The canal between Newbury and Bath is 57 miles (92 km) long and opened in 1810. During the late 19th and early 20th century the canal fell into disuse, but has recently been rennovated and is now an important tourist and leisure attraction in the region.

Between Bristol to Bath the canal effectively uses the River Avon. East of Bath the waters follows a purpose canal path next to the river, and often overlooing it. At places, as shown in this panorama, the canal crossed the river and railway on aquaducts, which then offer great veiws along the valley.

The canal is popular for canal boats, and alongside it is a shared walking and cycling path. At various pionts it is possible to hire canoes, kayaks and bikes.
