The area around Achnasheen is really quite flat, and the top of the railway bridge in the station seemed to be the best place to get a proper view of the surrounding valley. This panoramic photograph shows the view both up and down the track and over the fields by the River Bran.Achnasheen gets the name from 'field of the storm' and while it is no more prone to wind and rain than anywhere else in Scotland, there is very little shelter around. It is literally in the middle of the Scottish Highlands, about half way between Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh. The station here used to be an important stop on the Kyle of Lochalsh Line, serving a large area of Wester Ross.
Only about 30 people live in Achnasheen, the major features are the railway station, post office and The Studio Gallery Cafe, which sells some refreshments, jewelry, stones and other crafts from Scotland. Achnasheen is a regular stopping off point for coach tours of Wester Ross, and also famous locally for having the only petrol station for a long way in any direction.
There is a lot of good walking around Achnasheen as the village is close to Ledgowan Forrest, Glencarron and Glenuig Forrest, Kinlochewe Forrest and Strathconon.
Achnasheen is mentioned in Queen Victoria's diaries; she stayed at The Cottage waiting for a carriage to arrive from Kinlochewe whilst traveling to Loch Maree.
Travel and Getting There
Achnasheen lies near to the junction between the A832 (which runs from Grostari near Inverness to Gairloch in the north) and the A890. The A890 runs west from Achnasheen down Glen Carron and Loch Carron past Stromeferry to Kyle of Lochalsh.
