Stream to River Cluanie in Glen Shiel - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT

Glen Shiel offers some dramatic landscape, bordered by the South Glen Shiel Ridge. This stream was not in full flow, which meant I could stand on some of the flat rock that would otherwise be a wet, slippery and near suicidal point from which to take a panorama. I love water, the way it plays, and years of wearing had given this rocky surface a fantastic pattern.

Panorama taken next to a stream that feeds into River Cluanie in Glen Shiel in the Scottish Highlands. Glen Shiel was the location of a battle between the British forces and an alliance of the Jacobites and Spaniards in 1719, which the British won. The glen is also well known among the hiking a hill walking groups as The South Glen Shiel Ridge runs over 14km along the south side of Glen Shiel at a height of at least 800m and includes no fewer than seven Munros. This ridge separates Glen Shiel from Loch Quoich.

In this panoramic photograph you can see the stream descending for the river. The river starts on the flanks of the Sgurr an Fhuarail (a Munro of 988m). On the far side of the valley is the South Glen Ridge, of which peak of Aonach air Chrith (1021) is visible. The Cluanie Forrest is also on the far side of the valley. There is a layby on the A87 near to this point from which is often used by hill walkers. An alternative is to park close to the Cluanie Inn, a hotel near to Loch Cluanie, just a little further east along the road.

TRAVEL DIRECTIONS AND GETTING THERE

The A87 runs from Kyle of Lochalsh near the Isle of Skye to Invergarry, just south of Loch Ness. This point, close to the west end of Loch Cluanie, is about half way between the two at 27 miles from Kyle of Lochalsh, or 25 miles from Invergarry.
