Glen Shiel Waterfall - PHOTOGRAPHER COMMENT
This panorama was taken at about 8pm just as dusk was settling. The shot of water may not be that dramatic, but taking the photo was. The rocks were wet, slimy and lethal. I was not sure whether the camera and I would make it safely back to the car. However, the colours (I promise you they were real) in the sky and play of the water was certainly worth the effort. All that is missing is a sound file of the waterfall.
Glen Shiel Waterfall - FURTHER INFORMATION
Glen Shiel Waterfall - Scottish Highlands visitor guide showing a virtual tour of 'Glen Shiel Waterfall' linked to an interactive map with local and travel information. 360° panoramas from Highland.
Glen Shiel Waterfall is on the Shiel River at the northern end of Glen Shiel in the Scottish Highlands. Very close to here is the site of the 1719 battle between British forces and an alliance of the Jacobites and Spaniards in 1719, which the British won. Glen Shiel is also well known among hill walkers and 'Munro Baggers' for the number of Munros in the area. For the full list of these please see the Glen Shiel panorama.
The Five Sisters group of Munro hills run along the north side of Glen Shiel, while on the southern side is the Glenshiel Forrest and The Saddle (1012m), one of the Munro's of the South Glen Shiel Ridge. A little further along the road towards Kyle of Lochalsh is the old Kings Quarry.
This waterfall is known as "The Carry". Once used as a gathering place between drovers (cattle-herders) roads where livestock would be herded together to allow "dipping", a health-check process which happens once or twice a year during which animals are routinely partially submerged in medicated waters. This can be to ensure they are free from infestation or to administer medicines for prevention of seasonal illness, viruses etc. This waterfall flows through a steep valley so it provided an abundant fresh water supply and the natural geography helped contain the livestock in a small area making them easier for the herders to manage.
