St. Mary's Church in Cleobury Mortimer is an important church in southern Shropshire because of the unique, twisted, 13th century wooden spire. The spire was built on top of the church tower without any tying or flashing. As the soft stone crumbled and the spire timbers rotted and dried so the twist was gradually introduced into the spire.
As a result, this small, Anglican parish church has become something of a tourist attraction in the region, and is also open for visitors to explore the interior. As with most ancient churches, subsequent additions were made to St Mary's Church. The The nave and south aisle date from the 13th Century and the North aisle from the 14th. The side chapel was built by Roger Mortimer who was hanged in 1330.
The church still has an active worshipping community and programme.
