The Tagliamento River rises in the Mauria Pass (1195m) in the Italian Alps and flows south entering the Adriatic Sea between Trieste and Venice. This is a braided river, meaning that the channels vary quickly and dramatically as the water level rises and falls. The river flows through various gorges and beautiful scenery.

The main towns directly on the banks of the Tagliamento are Latisana and San Michele al Tagliamento. The river also flows past Tolmezzo, Gemona del Friuli, San Daniele del Friuli, Spilimbergo, Casarsa della Delizia, Codroipo, San Vito al Tagliamento, Pinzano al Tagliamento.
