The small village of Cholsey sits a little south of Wallingford and east of Didcot in Oxforshire, famous as the burial site of Agatha Christie. The village was originally founded on Ceol's Isle, an island in the middle of marshy ground near to the River Thames. In the 10th century, Queen Dowager Ælfthryth founded the Cholsey Abbey for nuns here, but this was later destroyed by Danes in 1006. Some of the original Saxon masonary can still be seen in the parish church of St Mary.

Murder and mystery are also part of present day Cholsey. Various parts of the popular TV series, Midsummer Murder were filmed in and around Cholsey, with The Fairmile Hospital, Cholsey Post Office and Stores and The Bell pub being used as locations.
