The Organ Pipes National Park is a small park of 152ha 23 kilometres north-west of Melbourne covering a deep gorge of Jackson Creek on the Keilor planes.
The Organ Pipes are basalt columns formed by lava 1 million years ago, other rock features include Roesette Rock, a radial array of basalt columns and sedimentary rocks with fossils laid down under the sea about 400 million years ago.
After European settlement the area deteriorated rapidly due to farming and introduction of exotic plants and animals. Since the park was established in 1972 efforts have been made to re-establish native fauna and flora.
